Emory University School of Medicine

Emory University School of Medicine is located on the university’s main campus in the city’s affluent Druid Hills neighborhood. The school grants an M.D. degree, a Ph.D. degree in biological and biomedical sciences and a D.P.T. degree, as well as master’s degrees in anesthesiology, genetic counseling and physician assistant and a bachelor’s degree in medical imaging. It also offers joint degrees with other graduate programs and continuing medical education.
Your first year and first semester of your second year toward your M.D. degree will involve preclinical education in basic medical sciences. You’ll then begin your clinical training in a small group. During the Discovery Phase in your third year, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct research in your choice of medical fields, including basic science, clinical research, and public health. One of the school’s noteworthy affiliated research institutions is the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University

Not only is the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University the only public medical school in the state, but it’s also one of the 10 largest medical schools in the nation, the oldest of the university’s schools and the leading provider of physicians in the state.
Some of the programs the college offers are the M.D. degree and joint M.D.-Ph.D., M.D.-M.P.H. and M.D.-M.B.A. degrees. Known for its faculty’s emphasis on research, the college was the site of the nation’s first hysterectomy.
Competition for admission to the school is high, and students accepted generally have a higher grade point average and a higher Medical College Admission Test score than students accepted at other medical schools in the nation. You’ll spend your first year toward your M.D. degree at one of two campuses. During your third and fourth years, you may study at either the main campus or at one of four satellite campuses. You’ll receive a short white coat during your first year and will receive your full-length coat upon graduation.
Mercer University School of Medicine

Dedicated to providing the state with gifted and talented physicians, the private Mercer University School of Medicine, or MUSM, admits only residents of Georgia into its programs. The school maintains campuses in Macon, Savannah, and Columbus.
You have a choice of several degree options at the school, including the M.D., the Ph.D. in Clinical Medical Psychology, a Master of Science in either Biomedical or Preclinical Sciences or Anesthesia or a master’s in either family therapy or public health.
Instead of a traditional lecture-based preclinical format, the school utilizes an innovative formal discussion-based curriculum that focuses on interaction within small groups. Your group meets several times each week to discuss specific subject matter. This approach to learning allows you to actively participate in both learning and teaching within the group. You have the option of either receiving your entire four years of M.D. training at Macon or Savannah or completing your third and fourth years at Columbus.
Morehouse School of Medicine

Recently ranked first among the nation’s medical schools for its social mission, Morehouse School of Medicine, or MSM, focuses on providing health care to minorities and rural and urban populations in underserved areas around the world.
Several notable health care professionals have been affiliated with the school, including Louis W. Sullivan, who served both as dean and as president and who later served as United States Secretary of Health & Human Services and David Satcher, who served as U.S. Surgeon General and later as president of the school. In addition to the M.D. program, you can choose from pursuing either a Ph.D. or an M.S. degree in one of the biomedical sciences or an M.P.H. degree.
As a student working toward your M.D. degree, you’ll take most of your first two years of classes on the main campus. You’ll also begin your clinical training during your first year at a private office and continue at a lab in the school’s National Center for Primary Care. Most of your clinical instruction will take place at Grady Memorial Hospital, the only level-one trauma center within 100 miles of Atlanta.
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – Georgia

Located on 23 acres in Suwanee, the private Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Georgia, or GA-PCOM, campus encourages its graduates to focus on underserved rural and urban areas. Buildings on the campus include the 170,000-square-foot Old Peachtree structure, which houses a research, a multi-use basic science, an anatomy and three pharmacy practice labs, an osteopathic manipulative medicine practice suite and the Simulation and Physical Therapy Education Centers.
Other structures located on the campus include the 21,000-square-foot Northlake building, which houses admissions, administrative, marketing and communications offices and alumni relations and human resources and the Georgia Osteopathic Care Center clinic. GA-PCOM was one of the first medical colleges to utilize high-tech patient simulators and standardized patient actors.
In addition to the D.O. program, the college offers the Pharm.D. and D.P.T. degrees and M.S. degrees in biomedical sciences, physician assistant and organizational development and leadership and a certificate in medical simulation. Once you’ve earned your degree, you can take advantage of the college’s osteopathic post-graduate training.
